This is the genuine Israeli Sniper Mauser Rifle 7.62 x 51. In the after match of WWII, many German arms, taken from their defeated forces, were rapidly redistributed around the world. This former German K98 bolt-action rifle wound up in Israel, and also wound up being converted to 7.62mm from its original 8mm chambering. Around 1956, the Israeli military began converting their older arms to the newer military cartridge for compatibility. An awkwardly high scope mount was also fitted to the side of this rifle about that time and a "Star of David" stamped on the receiver. Israeli K98 7.62 x 51 Short Side Rail (SSR) sniper rifle which is the 2nd variation of the side rail mount & has the locking screws, as described on pages 20-21 in the chapter ‘Alternate Procurement’ in the bible for Kar98k research Richard Law’s book ‘Backbone of the Wehrmacht’. This example was manufactured by JP Sauer & Sohn Suhl in 1940, as indicated by the Waffenamt’s factory proof stamps on the receiver ring, whereas the Nazi eagles have been over stamped.Serial numbers include the barrel stamped 11/56, the receiver 4146 with Star of David over stamped with 7.62, bolt (4146) with correct later sniper bolt safety. Various components including floor plate, barrel bands being replaced at some time during Israeli armourers refitting which is not unusual over the life of this rifle.The scope is a WAFFEN FRANKONIA WÜRZBURG (WFW) 6 x42 in good condition, picket reticule. Such history of the K98 sniper rifles is extremely fascinating, as there were many variants with the SSR being overlooked by many collectors. The bore is good, especially for a rifle of this age & history, so this would be an excellent collector. There would be very few genuine K98 sniper rifles in 7.62 x 51, in the hands of Australian collectors with none being available to buy for the past 20 years.
